A True Blue Fan from Philly asked:
I signed a release (stated the FCRA info within it) to have a consumer report or an investigative consumer report (I guess that’s a background check) done. I’ve accepted the job offer and wondered if I will also receive a copy of the background check? Also, what is the accuracy of these reports? If they’re like credit reports, they could be full of errors!

background checks usually check your criminal history from what i understand, so they’re pretty accurate. you can usually request a copy when they send out for the report, but usually you need to ask for it when you’re told they’re getting one done on you.

Under FCRA you are not normally entitled to a copy of the background check, but you should be informed and be furnished a copy of the background check before you are refused employment based on the background check.
The FCRA release allows the company to run a criminal background check and if they choose, a credit report. Under FCRA, the employer must give you a “pre-adverse action notice” along with a copy of the background report before an adverse action is taken. This allows you the chance to correct information that is wrong.
California law is even stricter than FCRA. Whether or not the employer is planning an adverse action, such as not hiring you based on the background check, if you indicate you want a copy of your report, it should be sent within three business days of the date the employer receives it. Federal law still pertains in the case of an adverse action based on a negative background check.
